frontpage Subaru WRX: An Emperor of Rally Cars A little while ago, on a dust choked rally track in a parched section of central Florida, of all places, it proved what street-ready can do. There were adrenaline-pumping lessons in how to downshift, brake slightly, then yank up for a split second on the handbrake for a classic, rally-type 170 degree turn. Each slide around a hairpin grew more exhilarating...and faster...and dustier...than the last. Then the pros took over to demonstrate its ability to reach three digit speeds on unforgiving dirt and gravel, while biting out of foot-deep ruts without even a struggle. If you plan to really rally, this isn't a car made for one, but for two -- you and an obligatory co-driver who's a must to read the hazards ahead. It's the co-driver who will keep the crest of a hill from launching the car into an unexpected abyss on the other side, rather than being the entry point of a safely-executed razor's edge turn. Despite the head-spinning, heart-pounding thrill of it all, there is one back-to-earth complaint. Not all rally drivers are six feet tall. This is begging for an adjustable clutch pedal. But beyond that, how does eMOTION! REPORTS rate the WRX? Well, if WRX doesn't stand for "World Rally Xtreme," it should. http://www.emotionreports.com |
